Dan Atherton: I love everything about this club

Warrington Town goalkeeper Dan Atherton feels that last week’s valiant effort away at Scunthorpe United can help build momentum ahead of the club’s FA Cup second qualifying round clash with Radcliffe on Saturday.

The Yellows came back from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against the early league leaders in the National League North, with the Yellows number one producing a heroic save in added time to preserve the draw.

Whilst many may look towards Atherton as the man who earned Mark Beesley’s side the point, the 24-year-old insists that he cannot take all the plaudits.

“It’s a pleasing moment, but at the end of the day it’s what I’m here to do,” he said.

“It was a massive performance overall from all the lads. They worked their socks off, and in the end it’s a brilliant point.

“Everyone had us down as massive underdogs, and no-one but us expected to go there and take something from the game. To go to their place and take a point from a side who had conceded just once in the league and hadn’t lost all season is a great moment.”

The 1-1 draw came in Atherton’s 100th competitive game for the Yellows.

He has kept 28 clean sheets during his time so far at the Cal.Delivery Stadium, and also scored twice during last season’s memorable debut campaign in the National League North.

Atherton expressed his pride at hitting the century milestone, saying: “I love everything about this club. The people who own it, the volunteers and the fans.

“Obviously I had that year where I left. In hindsight I probably shouldn’t have made the move away, and then I could’ve been sitting here talking about my 150th game. Since returning, I haven’t looked back.

“It’s a club I really enjoy being at, and I’m incredibly proud to be trusted by the gaffer week in, week out. Hopefully there’ll be many more appearances to come.”
