Dec Walker announces retirement from football
Warrington Town are sad to announce that hometown defender Dec Walker has been forced to retire through injury.
The 32-year-old has proudly represented the Yellows for the past two seasons, making 75 appearances and scoring four goals, the last of which was a free-kick away at Morpeth in March 2023.
He had been due to wear the number two shirt in National League North for a second successive season, but after struggling with an injury during the pre-season campaign, has made the difficult decision to call time on his playing career. Walker said: “It’s hard to put into words but unfortunately I have to retire from football sooner than expected due to a hip injury.
“I couldn’t have finished at a better club and been able to play a part in getting my local club promoted to its highest league.
“I have experienced a lot of highs in the game playing for Ireland, playing in Europe, winning at Wembley and not forgetting the best promotion of helping this club into the National League; to the lows of three knee major injuries and now for another injury to cut my career short.
“I’m not sure what’s next but I will be coming back to games to support the lads and hopefully see them push the club on again.
“I would like to thank Bees for bringing me to the club and the lads on what a great journey it has been.”
Walker came through the ranks at Wrexham and went on to make 32 first team appearances for the Welsh club.
He also played in the Welsh Premier League for Aberystwyth Town and Bangor City, before moving to the Northern Premier League.
A Republic of Ireland youth international, Walker made his Warrington Town debut against Morpeth in September 2022, and his final competitive appearance turned out to be in the 1-1 draw at Tamworth in April.
The news comes ahead of tonight’s season launch event at The Village Hotel, where manager Mark Beesley will pay tribute to the retiring Walker, as well as unveil two new signings.
Chairman Toby Macormac said: “Dec’s been great for the club on and off the field and losing a player who can play multiple positions is always a loss for any team.
“It’s an unfortunate situation but I wish him all the very best for the future and the club will always be here to help.”
