Dan Atherton: Causing chaos paid off

Warrington Town goalkeeper Dan Atherton admits he was pleased to see his plan of causing late “chaos” at Cantilever Park pay off after heading home his second injury-time equaliser of the season.

While most shot-stoppers go through an entire career without finding the back of the net, Atherton has managed to do so twice in a matter of months.

On home soil, his last-gasp, glancing header from a Sean Williams corner rescued a point for Town against Farsley Celtic back on October 24, with the match finishing 1-1.

Just 82 days later, Atherton repeated the trick in even more dramatic circumstances against high-flying Alfreton Town as the Yellows came from two goals down to snatch a share of the spoils.

This time it was a pinpoint Dec Walker free-kick which proved to be bang on the money, and Atherton rose highest once more to spark jubilant scenes in WA4.

Discussing his goal-scoring exploits, Atherton said: “Earlier on in the season when I broke into the team, one of the stats that I had was playing four games and going up for five corners.

“It’s difficult for other teams when a goalkeeper comes up from the back, and that’s what it’s about.

“It’s not about me scoring, it’s more about being able to cause some chaos in the box.

“I’m wearing bright green, so the idea is that people will swarm around me and it could free up people like Peter Clarke and Bohan Dixon who are far better at heading the ball.

“It’s always nice to score, but being honest, I’d always prefer a clean sheet to a goal every day of the week!”
