Evan Gumbs: Ambitious Yellows squad ready to push on

Supporters can expect a fitter, more ambitious Warrington Town side during the 2022/23 season, says Yellows defender Evan Gumbs.

In Mark Beesley’s first full pre-season at the helm, a real emphasis has been placed on defenders playing out from the back.

For Gumbs, a player with experience operating in midfield as well as his usual centre-back berth, he insists their refreshing approach to matches will continue to develop over the coming weeks and months.

Asked about the club’s more forward-thinking style of play, he said: “We’ve worked a lot on it, since the first day of coming back in for pre-season.

“The lads have been picking it up well. You can see all of the hard work coming off, and hopefully we can keep improving as the season goes on.”

One of the overriding factors behind their new attitude to matches, says Gumbs, is the increased levels of fitness that the squad have shown throughout pre-season training and their subsequent friendlies.

“Towards the end of games, we’ve looked a lot fitter than we have in the past,” the 25-year-old added.

“With a lot of big characters, the likes of Jay Harris, Sean Williams, Bohan and Josh Amis, they make sure the work’s getting done.

“No-one is cutting corners. Everyone is working hard so we can perform on matchday, and fitness will continue to play a massive part in that.”
