‘I love playing for Warrington’ – Mitch Duggan agrees new deal

Versatile right-back Mitch Duggan admits it was a no-brainer to extend his stay at Warrington Town.

Duggan was one of several existing players to commit their future to the Yellows ahead of the 2022/23 Pitching In Northern Premier League season.

The club has released its full retention list ahead of the new campaign, with Duggan and many others agreeing new terms at Cantilever Park.

Duggan proved to be a versatile member of the Yellows squad over the course of his 40 appearances last season, appearing at right-back, centre-back and also in midfield.

The 25-year-old is closing in on 150 Town appearances, having first completed a permanent move to the club from Tranmere Rovers in 2018.

“The decision to stay for another season was an easy one,” he said. “There’s no reason for me to want to play football anywhere else (except of course at a higher level), but still it would have to be the right club.

“I love playing for Warrington. Everything about it – the lads, the staff, the fans, the training ground – is brilliant, and of course I love playing at Cantilever Park.”

It proved to be a difficult end to the season for Duggan, who was shown a red card during the Yellows’ 2-1 play-off final defeat to Scarborough Athletic.

Despite admitting the afternoon left a sour taste, both personally and collectively, Duggan is confident his side can turn disappointment into motivation as they prepare to return to pre-season training later this month.

And with the new season less than two months away, he remains bullish about his side’s chances of enjoying success in 2022/23.

“To be honest, I think the lads have forgotten about the play-off final now,” Duggan admitted. “We can use that defeat as extra motivation, but I think everyone can agree that we’re done messing around with the play-offs. This season we’re looking to win the league.

“The majority have committed to staying on for next season, which is great news. Not a lot needed to be changed because we weren’t far away.

“We’ve lost a few good lads which is a shame, but that’s football.

“They’re easily replaced, and maybe with a few more additions we’ll have a complete and competitive squad ready to go and challenge for the league title.”
