Mark Beesley reacts to ‘hurtful’ Southport defeat

Warrington Town manager admits there are plenty of lessons to be learnt after watching his side fall to a convincing 3-0 defeat at home to Southport on Tuesday night.

A win would’ve taken the Yellows into the National League North play-off places, but they missed the opportunity to do so following a night of frustration at Cantilever Park.

Southport duo Richie Bennett and Marcus Carver capitalised on two defensive mistakes to put the visitors two goals up before half-time, and although Town rallied after the break, substitute Adam Anson’s netted the Sandgrounders’ third from a corner to put the result beyond doubt.

Speaking post-match, Beesley gave an honest assessment of his side’s performance.

“It’s a difficult one. To be beaten 3-0 at home in a derby game is hurtful,” he admitted.

“We experienced the joys in the reverse fixture, so we’ve got to take this on the chin and learn from it.

“We’ve given two poor goals away which gave them a real leg-up. There was a bit of inexperience from Kacper [Pasiek] which he will learn from, and we’ll help him to do that.

“I would also say they are two great finishes, especially the second one.

“To be honest, I still thought we played some really good stuff. It’s difficult when teams have something to hold onto and they get behind the ball, but we still created some really good opportunities.

“They weren’t clear chances, but they’re still opportunities and we need to be better in that area. It’s the final pass or shot, or the belief to get people in the box.

“In the second half before it went to 3-0, the keeper makes a great save from Josh [Amis] and we have one cleared off the line, but it wasn’t our day today.”

The Yellows will now enjoy a rare Saturday off, with their next league fixture taking them to Farsley Celtic on Tuesday night.

Beesley and his players are back home on Saturday 16 March as Gloucester City make the trip to Cantilever Park.
