Mikey Howard dreaming of more FA Cup magic

Warrington Town forward Mikey Howard hopes to see the club enjoy a fairytale run in the Emirates FA Cup this season.

The Yellows will begin their latest adventure in the competition this Saturday as they visit Morpeth Town, who they beat 2-0 on the opening weekend of the 2022/23 season.

The club famously reached the second round proper back in the 2014/15 season, defeating League Two Exeter City 1-0 in the first round in front of a sold-out Cantilever Park.

That was the Yellows’ first appearance at the first round stage of the competition, and Howard is eager to replicate that success again this season.

“I think it’ll be great if we could go on a good cup run in this competition,” he said. “It’s a good chance to show your quality against teams higher and lower.

“It’s also a chance to impress, in a way, with the amount of people who tune in to watch when games are televised.

“With the quality that we have in the team, I believe we could do very well in this competition.”

Howard has also enjoyed his own slice of FA Cup magic, having reached the third round with Marine during the 2020/21 season.

He scored the winning penalty to knock out football league side Colchester United in the first round, and came on as a second half substitute in the third round as the club set up a dream tie at home to Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur.

In that match, he also played alongside former centre-back and current Yellows assistant manager Dave Raven.

“The FA Cup is the best competition to be a part of,” Howard added. “Growing up as a kid, I loved watching Premier League teams play lower league teams, and to be part of that is so special.

“Scoring the winning penalty against Colchester was something I’d dreamt of, then to play against the likes of Dele Alli, Gareth Bale and all types of internationals was something I’d never forget.”
