Preview: Warrington Town vs South Shields

Warrington Town return to league action on Saturday as South Shields visit Cantilever Park.

Having suffered back-to-back home defeats in league and cup, Mark Beesley’s side will look to respond against one of the teams widely tipped for promotion to the National League North.

Town defeated a much-changed Mariners outfit 3-1 in the FA Trophy last month, although many of their key men will return for today’s rematch.

With goalkeeper Tony Thompson serving a one-match ban following last weekend’s red card against Guiseley, young Kian Hall is expected to make his full debut for the Yellows, having come on as a second half substitute seven days ago.

Josh Amis will also begin a three-game suspension following his late sending-off against the Lions.

Matty McDonald continues to be assessed after a recent shoulder injury, while Isaac Buckley-Ricketts could make his first start since recovering from appendicitis.

Yellows boss Mark Beesley says his players must be on top of their game if they want a result against a high-flying South Shields side on home soil.

He also insists Shields are the team to beat, given the quality at their disposal.

“It’ll be a good game,” he said. “I’ve said it before, if you finish above them, you’ll win the league.

“They’ll bring their strongest team, so it’s something to look forward to.”

Midfielder Bohan Dixon says the challenge of locking horns with promotion favourites South Shields is one that he and his Warrington Town team-mates will be ready for.

Shields arrive at Cantilever Park one point off top spot in the Northern Premier League, six points above the Yellows.

“If we can get a result it would be massive for the squad. Its always a good game against South Shields,” he said.

“We’ve trained well all week, preparing right on and off the field, so I’m sure we’ll be ready for the battle on Saturday.”
