Report: Warrington Town 2-1 City of Liverpool

Warrington Town maintained their winning start to pre-season with a 2-1 victory at home to City of Liverpool.

The fixture saw the Yellows return to Cantilever Park for the first time since sealing promotion to the National League North thanks to a dramatic 1-0 victory over Bamber Bridge at the beginning of May.

They almost took an early lead as Matty McDonald’s near post flick-on from a Connor Woods cross was well saved.

Not long after, Jordan Buckley showed some excellent skill, bringing the ball under control before turning and shooting on the bounce, striking the crossbar in the process.

Buckley wouldn’t be denied for a second time, though. With 35 minutes on the clock, Isaac Buckley-Ricketts cut inside and clipped a ball towards the back post which was headed home by the Yellows forward.

On the stroke of half-time, the Purps equalised through Anthony Miley, who directed an excellent header into the far corner beyond returning goalkeeper Dan Atherton following a corner from the right.

The second half saw a downturn in conditions, with heavy rain and thunderstorms making it difficult for both teams.

The winning goal came early in the second half as Sean Williams took aim from 30 yards out and hit a dipping shot which wrong-footed the City of Liverpool goalkeeper and nestled in the bottom right corner.

The Yellows will embark on two more home friendlies over the next week – Accrington Stanley are next to visit Cantilever Park on Tuesday night, before Morecambe face the Yellows next Saturday.
