Tom Hannigan reflects on first Yellows goal

Defender Tom Hannigan admits it was a special feeling to score his first Warrington Town goal against Stalybridge Celtic last week.

Hannigan scored the only goal of last Tuesday’s game, heading home after centre-back partner Evan Gumbs’ knock-down from a corner at the end of the first half.

A summer arrival at the Yellows, the former Altrincham defender has quickly settled well into life at his new club, keeping back-to-back clean sheets to start the new campaign.

Illness forced him off at half-time during Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Belper Town. But once fully fit again, he is excited to kick on and help maintain the Yellows’ promising start to the new season.

“It’s nice to get off the mark early on,” he said. “I knew once I’d made good contact it was in, and then I got a bit excited for a second or two!

“We’ve worked on set-pieces during pre pre-season, so it’s nice for one to come off. And being the winning goal made it extra special.”

Ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Atherton Collieries, Hannigan says he is hopeful that momentum can now be built in the early weeks of the season.

“Winning breeds confidence and it becomes a habit, so hopefully we can continue the good start,” he added.

“Maybe the back four and Tony Thompson take more pride in keeping clean sheets, but they come from everyone working hard off the ball and having a good shape about us, so long may it continue.”
