Walking Football teams boosted by tournament showing

The Warrington Town Walking Football team took part in a charity tournament last week in aid of the British Heart Foundation.

Walking Football sessions take place weekly at Cantilever Park, run by Dave Smith from Enjoy Football CIC.

Enjoy Football entered three teams in to the Culcheth Cup, including EF Warrington Town, playing in yellow and blue.

The annual tournament comprised of 16 teams, split in to four groups of four. The Enjoy Football teams did much better than in previous years, with EF Warrington Town and EF Dynamos picking up a win and three draws between them in the group stages.

Top of the pack was EF Phoenix though, who won two games to qualify from the groups, and then progressed through the knock-out stages all the way to the final, where they were beaten by Culcheth Strollers.

Dave Smith said: “In previous years, Enjoy Football teams have not got past the group stage or even close. Scoring has always seemed to elude the teams with us usually being outplayed and out thought. But not this year.

“Given that the teams Enjoy Football entered are all casual players from our sessions, and the winners and other teams taking part play competition both local and national we did fantastically well. Everyone has come away having really enjoyed the competitiveness but most importantly the camaraderie and bond between the groups who all supported each other, some never having met before.”
