Yellows claim victory away at Radcliffe

Warrington Town bounced back from the surprise home defeat to Ashton United with a 2-0 win away at Radcliffe.

Stefan Mols put the Yellows ahead on the stroke of half time after a determined run, and Jack Mackreth made the points safe with 15 minutes to go.

It marked a third win with a clean sheet in four away from home, with six games left of the regular season.

Skipper Mark Roberts returned to the starting line-up with Matt Regan moving to left back in the absence of Lewis Coulton (international duty) having had his red card from last week rescinded.

Striker Josh Amis was missing with a knee injury, so Jordan Buckley led the line and Mols returned to the 11.

A sloppy clearance by Radcliffe defender Jo Cummings gifted Buckley possession in the box for the first chance of the game, the striker digging out a shot that was comfortably saved by Jack McIntyre.

McIntyre and his defenders failed to adequately clear their lines on a couple of occasions, but remained unpunished by the Yellows.

The hosts should have taken the lead after seven minutes when Luca Navarro’s shot looped up for Jean Louis Akpa-Akpro who poked over the bar from yards out.

Navarro had the only other real chance of note for Radcliffe, his shot comfortably saved low to his left by Dan Atherton.

The deadlock was broken in the final minute of the first half, as Buckley flicked on for Mols, who showed determination and strength to hold off Cummings and then slid a left-foot shot underneath McIntyre for 1-0.

The Yellows had a couple of half chances to double their lead early in the second half, Luke Duffy’s rising shot well saved and then Buckley glanced wide from a Mols free-kick.

Radcliffe had to chase the game though, and started to get a bit of a foothold, during which Navarro had a shot tipped wide by Atherton.

But they were dealt the killer blow on 76 minutes when substitute Mackreth, with his first touch, diverted home from Mols’ seemingly goalbound effort after good work by Duffy from a quick throw.

The Yellows maintain fifth place, and a play-off spot, ahead of the visit of Mickleover to Cantilever Park next Saturday.
