Yellows slip to home defeat against Mickleover

A second half error sent Warrington Town to back-to-back home defeats as they lost 1-0 against Mickleover.

Goalkeeper Dan Atherton kicked his clearance against a defender and gifted an open goal to Stuart Beavon to win the game with 17 minutes to play.

There had been little to choose between the two sides, and little in the way of chances, and ultimately the Yellows will be relieved to have seen the teams around them also drop points.

The visitors arrived in good form but with nothing to play for and the game was flat for large parts.

Both sides had half chances in the opening 10 minutes, with Matt Grivosti and Andy Dales having shots comfortably saved by the respective ‘keepers.

A Stefan Mols free-kick was pushed over the bar by Jonathan Hedge and two Grivosti corners were headed wide at the back post by Matt Regan.

But from the midway point in the first half, Mickleover had the better of possession and territory and neither side looked like creating chances.

Warrington rolled the dice with the introduction of Jack Mackreth, but were dealt a blow when Jordan Buckley hobbled with a hamstring injury.

And then the killer blow came on 73 minutes. Shaquille Macdonald’s ball forward caught Atherton in no man’s land outside his box, and his clearance cannoned off the back of a defender and landing on a plate for veteran striker Beavon to slide in to the empty net.

There was no real response from the Yellows, save for a Josh Amis shot that whistled wide, their only effort towards goal in the whole of the second half.

Warrington Town are next in action away at Basford United on Tuesday before the visit of Stafford Rangers on Saturday.
